I will say auto manufactures have been under MASSIVE regulations for a really long time. The EPA jails aftermarket manufactures who modify vehicles or manufacture modified components without a license (that you can't actually obtain bwt). (I have 2nd hand experience if you want to discus this in detail) This goes for modified vehicle firmware as well. Even if you own your vehicle, people who make firmware editing tools have been jailed
