i think this generations need for everything to be one thing is really weird. so many people trying to resolve everything down to a single option. its a bizarre phenomenon.

Some of it is control and branding and the like, but the world has also gotten much smaller. You can't have two things without having two names because there's only one global namespace.
Less governance. Larger ‘small’ community involvement.
The larger the small groups, the smaller the interference, the larger the beneficial impact to local people.
