Phase one of the east fresian dairy sheep milking parlor complete

Last season, we moved the dairy sheep along with the hair sheep using a mobile milking stanchion. It worked well but this year we decided to try a static paddock system for just the dairy sheep close to the house to save time. This shelter will act as a milking parlor and as stall to separate the lambs from the ewes at night. I still have to build the stall and add gates. Looking forward to having a flow of fresh milk again. We didn't freeze nearly enough and have been buying milk over the winter.

I was today years old when I learned there were dairy sheep. Goats: yes, cows: of course, thought sheep were raised solely for wool and aggravation.

Well just look at all the things I'm learning today. Love me some feta! Always thought it was goat's milk.

you can make it out of any kind of milk, it's just mostly made from sheep because that makes the nice hard high fat form that goes well in salad as diced cubes

in bulgaria and former yugoslavia white cheese, mostly from cows, is a very common ingredient in many national dishes, especially pastries and salads, bulgarians call it "sirene" and serb/croat is just "sir" - the bulgarians use the turkic derived "kashkaval" for yellow cheese where the serbs just call all forms "sir"

there is an epically tasty hard swiss cheese from Bosnia called Livanski Sir, made from usually a blend of cow and sheep cheese, and is a staple savory treat at christmas time

oh yeah, and there is another special kind of white cheese type product very popular in the balkans also called "kaimak" which is basically the stuff you start with to make any kind of cheese, very often eaten alongside cevapi, a blended mince sticks, usually charcoal grilled, that is super tasty, it's a little bit like cream cheese but better

What’s the flavor of sheep milk like?

It's sweet and has a nice creamy texture. Superior to cows milk in my opinion but I'm obviously biased.

i've never had it but goat is lovely, just a bit more pungent smell than cow

sheep has the highest fat content of any milk, pretty much the best milk fat, i think, like the beef dripping of butter

Do you make cheese? Sheep’s milk feta cheese is to die for.

Not yet, looking forward to it though.

I buy goats milk at a farmers mkt sometimes, its delicious😊

How much milk per animal are you getting at the onset?

~1qt/day was what we were getting last season but it was our first time and we were flying by the seat of our pants with no mentorship.

East Friesian dairy sheep providing fresh raw milk for the homestead daily

This is the second season milking our East Friesian dairy sheep. We are getting a little more than 1/2 gallon of milk a day from two ewes. Whatever we don't immediately use, we freeze, or make yogurt, ice cream or "farm cheese" (basically curding milk with vinegar). Still haven't tried to make proper cheese with the milk yet but looking forward to it. We also use some of the milk to make soap.

Last season, we kept the dairy sheep in with the main flock we raise for lamb meat. I would move the milking stanchion and equipment along as we rotated the sheep through the pastures. It turned out to be more work than it was worth keeping all the sheep together. This season we created a static 5 paddock system just for the dairy sheep close to the house. Now it's a short walk to milk in the morning and to separate the lambs at night.
