I believe the peak of the American empire is behind us, but I do not believe America will descend into mad max style chaos or become a third world nation at any point.

Most likely we become like Europe. We have a permanent class structure. Some enhanced forms of socialism and we spend the majority of our days seeking pleasure and escapism.

Yeah, if we built anything to last, have a renaissance of cultivate art and civilization and then wait 500 years, the US might become like Europe, but with shittier food for most people. More likely it will become "Ready Player One".
