What is the next best step for me to upgrade my Nostr wallet from using Alby for free? What is a good option for now short of learning how to run my own lightning node? I’m still running on free Alby credits right now and I want to zap people again.

sorry missed the "no my own node"

Wallet of Satoshi, use iVPN or Mullvad (you can set it to just run for that app) and be in switzarland or ukraine (i prefer ukraine because it's the money laundering capital of the world and so it's funny) and lie about your location when they ask you.

https://coinos.io is a custodial lightning wallet that works well.

So custodial lightning wallets are still legal and operational in America, but some companies just decided to pull out preemptively when the Samourai stuff was going on?

I'm using it and able to zap as often as I did with Alby (meaning about half my zap attempts produce an error).

I can't speak to the motivations for shutting down custodial wallets, but your assumption is probably correct.

Thanks I’ll try it next.

Alby cloud. I opted for that because it’s nomad friendly and Raspberry Pis make for horrible hardware.

Plus the costs are the same if I want to have a static IP for a more reachable node.

To be precise, Minibits holds ecash from cashu mints. However, bitcoin reserves backing the ecash are held by mints' lightning nodes custodially. You trust your mints until you redeem your sats over lightning.

Thank you for the precision !
