I'm struggling to connect a phone with calyx to it. Ideally I would like to use it a simple screen mirror, without having to use microg.

What feature of Android Auto are you looking to use? If you're trying to use Google Auto, that might be difficult, but if you can list out the two or three things that you're interested in, you may be able to find open source alternatives.
