I'm about a 50/50 mix. Do you use the filter at nostr.wine? That aggregates several free ones, filters spam. Found I could live with fewer relays on mobile and that really helped my battery.
I’d keep it around 20 tops, less is better for battery 🐶🐾🫡
Yep did the personalized nostr.wine. It lapsed and that gave me the excuse to evaluate everything.

I decided not to, since I have no issues pushing notes to many relays. And I am already fetching from the ones that wine does, but with less lag! 🐶🐾🫡

I have considered expanding, but I haven't hit triple digits yet of subs. Prolly will add one in Asia and one in Europe then. Have to look at some Internet topology maps to determine how to best spread them.

Yes, some. That was part of my choice for Oracle. Ampere is much cheaper, but there is still cost.
I always had issues with Oracle. When I finally managed to open my account with them, they told me to pissoff if I wanted more regions. So I closed it promptly! Never again for me! 🐶🐾🫡

Does geography factor into all of your relays decisions?
Talking this out loud I guess it makes sense to be on a few big public ones like Damus, Munity and nostr.band.
And then pay for a few really fast and good ones.
Where in your decision making process would you nix a relay based on too far away geographic wise?
Yes! I do consider how far the relay is and the round trip of the packet. I try to go no further than west coast US and try to avoid EU due to huge latency from Asia! 🐶🐾🫡
Use nostr.wine (filter is not required if you don’t want) , add wss://nostr.mutinywallet.com to broadcast your notes to all online relays, also https://nostrgraph.net/relay (probably similar). Add wss://purplepag.es for profiles notes (special purpose relay) and you should be good! 🐶🐾🫡
Additionally, you can check https://stats.nostr.band/#relay_users to see most active relays and add/pay for the ones you choose. Enjoy! 🐶🐾🫡
