I was in el salvador and it seemed pretty clear he saved that country from a terrible fate. Life there was run by gangs - you never knew when they'd turn up and just take stuff etc, fuck you up. Not just money / goods presumably.
Not only that but he apparently rose thru the system, buying all the gangs off with promises etc - as they had all the power, the system was totally corrupt - and then when he got enough power he reneged on all those agreements and just locked them all up or killed them.
Most people there (from my experience) are now preoccupied with what will happen if / when he goes, because most of the bad guys are just sat there in prison and if they come out they'll just take over again.
Interesting, I knew the back story, but didn't appreciate the fear of Bukele's term ending.
As any politician he might end up being a tyran, stealing even the toilets of the parlament... But what it is unquestionable is that he delivered what he was hired to do
