The homage to Dionysus thing sounds like some scholars' attempts to connect the early Christians' celebration of the Eucharist with the ancient Greeks' Eleusinian Mysteries (which was connected to the cult of Dionysus/Bacchus).

St. Augustine argued that the pagan gods were/are all demons in disguise. All this is nothing new, unfortunately. In fact it's very old and sinister.
