How much Bitcoin does the US have and where do they come from?
⚫️ 198,109 BTC, worth $17.7 billion, are currently controlled by the US Treasury, mostly through civil and criminal asset seizures.
⚫️ According to Trump's March 6 executive order, the Bitcoin Strategic Reserve will be funded by confiscated assets. Government agencies must conduct an audit to determine actual holdings.
The largest seizures:
⚫️ 69,370 BTC (Silk Road, 2020) - seized from hacker "Individual X," who turned over the stolen funds to authorities.
⚫️ 94,636 BTC (Bitfinex, 2022) - seized from Ilya Lichtenstein after private keys were found in a cloud storage account.
⚫️ 51,351 BTC (Silk Road, 2022) - discovered in a device stored inside a chest that was in an underground hiding place and inside a popcorn tin belonging to pirate Jimmy Zhong.
Will these BTC be sold?
⚫️ The US government previously auctioned off confiscated BTC, but the White House has now banned further sales.
⚫️ The Treasury Department and the Commerce Department will explore ways to expand the reserve without burdening taxpayers.
