Calcium hydrate aka Lime is not only what we used in rammed earth walls and earthen floors to avoid using so much cement but it is also the basis for the "paint" for the shops.
Lime, water, salt with mineral oxides for color. The entire building was "painted", lime washed for less than $50usd. If we made it white it would be like $6usd.
This "Cal" as it's called in Mexico is non toxic, cheap and held up for a year full dun, hurricanes winds and rain.
Why we dont do more of this where we can in the world. Paints, stains and sealers can be very toxic, but not the ranch.
