Someone needs to talk to Cory Doctorow…

“Bluesky lacks the one federated feature that is absolutely necessary for me to trust it: the ability to leave Bluesky and go to another host and continue to talk to the people I've entered into community with there. While there are many independently maintained servers that provide services to Bluesky and its users, there is only one Bluesky server. A federation of multiple servers, each a peer to the other, has been on Bluesky's roadmap for as long as I've been following it, but they haven't (yet) delivered it.” nostr:note1lzt23788zwr5hy82j8yxp43dcz8859gym6mfrrwt3w3xgvpcwzuqydh8zy

Cory is pretty leftarded but there may be some hope for him yet.

people aren't monoliths that can be dismissed so easily. i find his reasoning consistent and engaging. do i always agree? nope, but i feel like i am grappling with real value when i read his work.

the "left" is a phantom. the "right" is a phantom. think clearly.

I didn't dismiss him. I said there is hope

And I like his books. I read Walkway and enjoyed it.

"the left" (and the rest of the political spectrum) may indeed be phantoms, but the impulse towards coercive collectivism is a very real thing in someone's mind. You see it with Cory.

It's the kind of impulse that is incompatible with individual freedom - and thus with building self-determined communities (something "the left" often claims to want).

His Bluesky take is a perfect encapsulation of this. Bluesky is a centralized system that claims to be liberating but at the end of the day it is antithetical to individual self-determination - you see Cory stumbling around on this logical incoherence in his belief system in realtime.

I agree that he seems like he might be able to work through it (not a monolith), but to do so he would necessarily need to rebalance towards individual liberty and away from collectivism. And that's the thing I was referring to as "left". Sorry for being imprecise.

thanks for the more complete explanation of your opinion. "pretty lefttarded" was a dismissive comment, even with the glimmer of hope.

Indeed! Stupid of me.

i think it's very easy to follow the short-form social media pattern and sum things up into little bon mots.

what is rarer is a user following up with further explanation, so you are to be commended. thanks again for taking the time.

Same applies to you for being charitable and hearing out clarification.

Likely wouldn’t get past his spam filter.

Why not?

Why does this post, from the CEO of Nostr, have a "mention" tag in reference to a previous post in the thread which it doesn't reference in its text?

There are 2 Tim Bouma on Bluesky, which one shall I follow?

The guy with the bike. trbouma

I think the criticism is valid enough for me. I also has same concern like him

There are still too much Bitcoin vibes on Nostr for him. So later, be patience. He will find it.
