Clients could turn off the reply filtering by default. That way it’s opt in.

💯 with some sort of indicator on pfp or something so people don't think they're replies are being seen when they're not.
It would be a client specific setting. So other people wouldn’t know what you have it set to. There’s no reason for people to know how you choose to view content on Nostr.
