Is Nostr forever #Bitcoin and #LightningNetwork only? In particular, what would need to be done to introduce another L1 payment coin? Would it just (LOL) be a question of building a client which supports the novel L1 or would some adaptation be needed on the protocol level? #asknostr

Why would anyone need another "payment coin"? There's only #bitcoin and there is #shitcoin

I would say it is more a case of #Bitcoin + #L2s versus #Bitcoin + another #L1. At some point, the complexity and compromises involved in #Bitcoin L2s and the necessary improvements of the main chain to support them could potentially be eclipsed by the simplicity of #Bitcoin + another #L1.

Technically speaking, #Nostr protocol can be expanse with NIP, as the current internet can be expanse using RFC or #Bitcoin throught BIP

So, #Nostr might be expanse for other L1 payment.

However, you can't zap/tip anyone with a L1 chain. Even with #Bitcoin. It's the #LightningNetwork, builded upon #Bitcoin, who can sustain many fast and small payments.

Thanks for this informative answer. So would one create a pull request for a new NIP and who decides whether to accept the PR?

While I obviously agree that zapping with on-chain #Bitcoin wouldn't make sense, part of the reason behind my initial question is the principle of an L1 which can indeed scale and offer fast & cheap payments.

For NIP stuff, i would suggest to check https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips

If a blockchain can sustain the traffic created by people zapping eachother, that blockchain have probably really big large size blocks and cannot be sustainable in the long term

Thanks, I am aware of NIPs generally and in particular have become acquainted with some of the nsec-related NIPs in my two weeks as a user!

Also, I don’t have a problem with candidate L1s being ruled out as not fit for purpose due to large block size or other flaws.
