also, yes, hunting criminals who venture into the property and refuse to leave
there is a sign on a fence on the property next to mine that says:
trespassers will be shot
survivors will be shot again
it might not be portuguese law to allow people to own guns without "reason" (excluding self defense btw) but probably half the population of this island are farmers and shooting rabbits and pesty pigeons is a minimal reason to own both a 22LR rifle and a 20 gauge shotgun, and believe me, when it's planting season you hear the farmers shooting at the pests pretty often, even right next to the airport over in Santa Cruz
i also have seen around the area near the eastern edge of the airport there is a shooting range and goodness me the sound of 12 gauges emanating from it was a song to my ears
btw, also during january, which seems to be when there is a lotta planting of crops, this valley (sao vicente) rang out with the sound of fireworks that are not for show, they just go up in the air and one big bang, not celebratory fireworks, i can speculate that the reason was to scare off the pigeons that hunt the seeds they plant in the ground, kinda glad that shit stopped now but i suspect most of it was legit agricultural purposes
