I think this is inevitable. Companies put sooo much money into developing these games and keeping them updated and patched while creating lore and more additional content on top that I feel they are justified in wanting to own their product while charging user a fee for access to it. Games have evolved well past a simple cartridge of disc. I don’t like it but I kinda get it. nostr:note15cc0yenlm5nqmtfx833chm0chll6vdpc6z58s9ewz6cesk0awdms8csxxh

Probably the same could be said for every technological item, for cars, computers, softwares.. it's a very dangerous path IMHO.
It's all good until people get deplatformed or they got their acces to game blocked, because.. "WEF said too many hours playing games is bad (China did it already), you can play only when we tell you to.. and you'll be happy."
That’s a big “oooof”
Yeah China comes to mind, where you have a government -enforced playtime quota. Even without the quota, imagine the amount of surveillance built in to even make that possible
💯 .. pure dystopian future.
I would like to add that it's a bullshit reason. Ubisoft was doing just fine financially before 2022 or so when they patched all the games you bought to no longer load without a Ubisoft login.
Indeed.. I also believe many of these kind of moves are not driven by real economical reasons, but more from upper high heads decisions and "vision".
The subscribe and "dependance" (not sure this term exists Italian here😅) model is being pushed everywhere, reducing more and more the possibility to be self sufficient and self sovereign, from food, to transports, to money, to news, to games.. etc etc.
The fantastic software they produce is unfortunately captured by an ethically deprived corporation, to the point of committing as much evil as the state allows (or even worse, imposes). It's sadly true of many otherwise great companies.
Open-source game development. We do not need companies to produce quality games no more. Sorry not sorry, the best and more fun games I have played are the ones that can be owned and so modded.
Players know what they want better then the developers.
