I think there will always be choice.

I believe there is fundamentally always a level of free will.

But at the same time I look around and think that most people already choose to live as passive beings.

The task in life is to recognise and seize upon our own agency.

Yeah exactly. Life without a mountain to climb would just feel meaningless. But maybe we will be able to simulate that

Like levelling up a video game character.

But at the end of the day for me it is hard not to be left feeling empty from these activities. You know fundamentally they are not โ€œrealโ€.

That is why there is so much sense of meaninglessness in our world.

This is reminding me of The Unibomber Manifesto - Industrial Society and Its Future. He talks a lot about how in our modern world people cling to what he calls surrogate activities and many of the problems that arise from this.
