The governed have become spectators. Civic responsibility has withered into passive outrage. Those entrusted to serve now presume to rule. Elections have become rituals, not remedies.
The Founders did not envision a docile republic. They understood that self-government demands effort, memory, and will.
The question is not whether government serves the people, but whether the people remember they are to be served.
They work for us, or they don’t work at all.
