I think that for group chats to really work on Nostr they have to be scoped to a tiny shared set of relays -- or a single relay. The current way NIP-28 works is not very efficient.

Also someone really needs to fork Telegram, or do a TUI chat client that is very performant, something like that, so at least someone can find some joy in actually using these chat groups for something useful.

Agreed. One of the first ways creators build their communities are a discord or telegram channel.
As they grow they promote (often unpaid) moderators to help prevent unwanted content and manage bad actors.
I’m not sure we have the protocol level support for moderations needed yet. I know private groups has mod events defined - however unsure it’s enough.
And likely these communities will centralise around a relay or even purpose build micro relay - and I think it can then filter and manage content better too.
Japanese Nostr uses it I think, as some of the posts are definitely replies to other ones but they're not shown as a thread - so most likely from a channel.
i was under the impression group chats were client specific - hence group chats on coracle are not visible on snort etc
