Turns out this was due to a problem with Firefox on my laptop. Not sure what's causing that problem, but I was able to connect using a different computer.
I must be highly regarded, because I see nowhere to verify my npub.
Tap / click on your profile pic (if you can’t tell who you are, spam a few emojis to see which anon is you), then you can edit your name, pfp, and enter your npub and press “verify” and it will give you instructions
