In the last ~week I've noticed that when I do my usual bouncing between clients, some of the posts I've made on one client are not showing up on the others, while at the same time, I've seen a dramatic engagement drop

Seems to suggest that either I, or one of the clients I frequent (Amethyst/Primal/Iris) is making some error with relays

Has anyone else noticed this? If there are any smart people out there willing to help audit my relay strategy, I'd love to connect. Something weird is going on here

Amethyst has very helpful how to's in the relay settings. It walks you through which ones you might want to pick under "Relays" in the menu page you get when you click your pfp at the top left of the mobile screen.

nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z has also written a lot of helpful notes you might search for.

Is there a simple page somewhere just showing a relatively-consensus list of relays to use to make sure all of my followers see my content?

I also saw nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 and nostr:npub1utx00neqgqln72j22kej3ux7803c2k986henvvha4thuwfkper4s7r50e8 were at the forefront of a big WoT push recently, but I don't know what the ultimate takeaway from that saga was. Would love a TLDR

Yes. The relay settings in Amethyst. It's incredibly user friendly. I don't fancy myself very technical, but I just went with the top reccs there.

Don't be afraid to try things.

WoT relays help reduce spam to almost zero. They're great for most Nostr users. They aren't good for new users however, because new users don't have a WoT yet.

If a new user is following only one or a handful of npubs, seems like a solution that effectively pulls in their webs of trust (and merges or superimposes them) would work pretty well

The new user would need someone to follow them for them to enter into a Web of Trust. Yyou can follow as many people as you'd like and your WoT isn't improved.

Depends on what you mean by WoT and what it is being used for. I usually think of “my WoT” as constructed out of my follows, their follows, their follows, etc (depends on how many hops away you want to go), and I use it to filter out spam. For this use case, it doesn’t matter whether i have any followers or not. Just because someone follows me doesn’t tell me whether that npub is a bot or not.

If the issue is whether a new user is visible to establshed users, then you’re right, that user will need to be followed by someone.

How many followers does a new user need to make it through the WoT filters? Depends on how the WoT is being calculated and implemented.

My follows and my follows follows, correct. Correct again, a new person following me is not in my WoT.

Which is why I said this system hurts new users because they have zero WoT.

One of the features of using the GrapeRank WoT score as a spam filter is that if you’re a new user, it only takes a small handful of trusted followers to boost your score high enough so you don’t get lost in the filter.

This is my latest demo — currently I’m rebuilding it with a neo4j graph database for improved performance

Where can I find yours? Would love to add it to my list

When adding this relay, does it essentially just pull the events from the npub’s WoT?

Yes, it does that, but you can also write to it too.

Oh nice. How does it prevent actual spammers from writing to it? Or does it not matter because the spam notes are never shown to anyone (so it’s maybe an issue for storage/ddos but not the nostrich’s UX)?

It doesn't actively do this. If you follow a spammer then a spammer can write to my relay. It's up to the community to not follow them. But I can always blackliat an npub.

Cool, that’s an interesting approach. I’d imagine it works best in a “lots of smaller decentralized relays” sort of setup, right?

Also, added 🤙

Every time I try to add it, it will not “take”. Is it a relay for elites only (coders)?

Can you point me to somewhere I can read up on Web of Trust for nostr? I have vague recollections on WoT in relation to PgP or announcing keys at in person events etc.

Nostr newbie here, trying to learn about the relationship between relays & content discover ability

I have this page where you can search the minimum relay set to make sure you reach everyone you follow. Not really easy to guarantee the opposite. The reader should make sure he can reach the writer , not the other way around

My follow/followers list gets whack. Every time.

Maybe your kind 3 relay list got rugged. Your profile on Damus doesn’t show any relays.

Just verified and you don’t have a kind 3 relay list. Kind 3 relays lists are deprecated, but I think Damus still uses it.

I don't even know what kind 3 relay list means, what's the TLDR on that and how I can fix this?

You can just add relays using Damus

I think kind refers to the different actions: it's outbox (writing/publishing), inbox (reading/what shows up in the feed), and interactions (replies/reactions).

Amethyst use the outbox model, which I believe is the reason you can set specific relays to handle your private/public inbox, DMs, private and local relays and general relays. Amethyst seems to capture posts and comments I can't see with any other client. Just go with what Vitor recommends and add to it if you want. Problem is not everyone uses an Android phone. I want to try and like other clients, but honestly, and I don't want to discourage development in any way, but Amethyst is what I use unless I'm just trying something else out.

Where can I find nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z's recommendations?

And I agree, I have the smoothest time on Amethyst overall. Primal is my backup and the one I recommend to most newbie friends since it spans across Android/iPhone/Desktop, so I'm with you on that struggle; I hope all of these clients play better together soon

In Amethyst, settings > relays, there are a couple of recommendations for Search and DMs. But if you go to the General Relay section and tap "Default", you can use some of those for your public/private inbox, public outbox, etc... Some that are really good, that can be used for DM, private/public inbox/outbox that have come up in discussions (I don't remember where) have been:

wss://nostr.mom

wss://nos.lol

wss://relay.0xchat.com

wss://nostr.bitcoiner.social

The others in your General defaults list are probably really good options as well. These will definitely get you in the mainstream, from my experience. Others may want to chime in here...

Also, I found that if I'm using the same nsec in Primal, for example, that I'm using in Amethyst, the result is terrible. I had to create the same profiles using nsecs created with Primal to get a result that was in any way usable.

Happens to me a lot. People will blame relays. I've followed recommended relays every time they come up, not a lot of luck with that strategy 100% of the time.
