I’m trying for a second time to grow Washingtonia filifera and robusta palms from seed. I was inspired after reading Palms Won’t Grow Here by David A. Francko. The first seeds I got came with instructions to cold stratify, which didn’t make much sense for a palm, but I followed instructions anyway. After 30 days of cold stratification and 6 weeks in soil, they still haven’t sprouted. Palmtalk.org is a great forum for palm enthusiasts, and no one there said they needed cold stratification. I was told you put them in the dirt and they sprout like weeds. That’s what I am trying for round 2. I just planted them today and they are on a heat mat. Time will tell.

What's your thing with palms? Where did this interest set seed?

I don't know. I like palm trees. Why do you like cows? I had a coconut palm in a pot as a teenager until it died. These are more cold hardy so I'll try and overwinter them after a little while. I overwintered two windmill palms last year with nothing more than a cardboard box and a blanket a few nights. It's a challenge. It's fun.

Because beef.

We tried lemon trees a couple of years. They died. Gave that up. Maybe try again for the pole shift atrium 🤷
