Why werent they already doomed?

Some of them will get rugged.

Some will discover self custody.

You can’t graduate until you learn.

It’s still a net positive.

I'm just asking what would the difference be? If anything Ecash is an improvement over the current state of custodial lightning.

It is, especially for new users, since you don’t have to download a separate app to start using it.
