Is there a cosmology that's relevant about the existence or absence of the "self"?

A few days ago I was thinking that you can be responsible with others and even love them, but you can't really be "good (benevolent)" with them in the same way that you are good with yourself. If there is no self, that would change the path of my research on that topic.
