what i struggle with is when they have a topic they deem to be of similar importance/urgency (e.g. climate change) and I’m the one supposedly on the titanic

Stay strong Tim! The climate change thing is so emotional for people it almost becomes untouchable for me. I have to just nod and hope they stop felling bad for living.

I tell you the difference.

Did you get your world view solely from mainstream media or alternative media.

Or did you do your own research asking hard questions. Who could profit? What could be underlying agendas? Are people or institutions dependent on public money? Are they pressured into something?

If you conclude all that is not the case then youbcan weigh probabilities based on your subjective knowledge or feeling on a topic. That doesn't mean you are smarter. Just that your position will be based on reality with a much higher probability.

ya except if i tried to explain that the conversation would devolve into values judgments and ad hominems. i mean i’m all for doing things in a way that doesn’t trash our environment but where I take up issue is when they tell me how I should be living my life (and it usually involves making yourself so small that you use essentially no energy or (somehow) giving them a license to impose authoritarian rules on you)
