Can anyone help me understand why BTC seems more popular than ETH? I’m fairly new to this space but have read there is a huge energy requirement for BTC vs ETH.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

BTC is backed by Energy in the form of proof of work. Proof of work is performed to secure the bitcoin network and create new coins into existence. The energy requirement is actually a feature and not a bug of the Bitcoin network :)
