Elon is selfish, just like anyone else. Ayn Rand did an excellent job of explaining this, if anyone is interested.
And, as a selfish person, he is going to side with who will benefit him.
Now, being selfish doesn't make it malicious. A mother's selfish want to make her children safe is actually a good thing.
They have both taken a stand to stop globalism. Benefits them both. And, actually slows down the total destruction of the USA.

I think he truly believes democracy is in jeopardy. Basically the Dems are letting illegal Aliens in and incentivizing them to be loyal voters to the Dems by giving them things. He thinks if they win itāll be too late to turn around with another 4 years 
From his perspective I imagine it would be easier to negotiate with Trump than Kamala to achieve his personal and business goals.
Kamala is more anti-business focused and also anti free speech so Elon is likely in her crosshairs.
We only see Trump from a distance in the UK, he is banned from his golf course in Scotland.
This is my preferred perspective.
However, like almost all successful, non entrepreneurial, business owners, he appears to have the usual narcissistic and psychopathic traits.
The difference, however is that most business leaders donāt have access to global thermal nuclear weapons of total destruction.

I think both the U.S. and the UK are stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to political leaders.
