Yareta (Azorella compacta), also known as "Llareta" in Spanish, is a 3,000-year-old flowering plant native to the cold Puna grasslands of the Andes at altitudes between 3,200 and 4,500 meters (10,500 - 14,750 ft). Its tightly compacted growth habit is an adaptation to its high elevation lifestyle which helps it prevent heat and water loss in these windy environments.
