I recently upgraded my laptop and now have a spare old thinkpad to play around with. What Linux distro should I put onto it? I have been running Kubuntu for years and I am not willing to give up KDE. Aside from that anything goes.

Give garuda linux a try. I switched 3 weeks ago from fedora. Happy so far.
If you like Garuda, have you considered Nobara?
If you want to learn Arch, check out a distro called Arcos. It's very interesting to play around and learn.
If you want something that just works I recommend Fedora or a spin known as Nobara which is geared towards gaming and content creation.
All can easily be run with KDE 👍🏻
