I would like to better understand:

1. My Client to relay relationships.

2. Relay to relay relationships.

3. Follower client to my relay relations.

4. Private vs public relay in this mix.

5. And caching/archiving my own content to not solely lean on others for storage.

Is there a plain English explanation of these concepts somewhere, so I can familiarize myself with how to set up my relays optimally?

Generally relays don't talk to one another. Users configure their clients on what relays to open websockets with; those configurations allow the client to either read events off relays or send relays notes. Notes can be all sorts of events, and clients are written support events they care about and relays accept notes for events they choose to support
