I actually don't need much to be free. I've got £170k left on my mortgage and if that was paid, I could do a chill job at my local gardens. I live near a beach so go sea swimming in the summer and surfing all year which costs me nothing. Its different to different people. I don't need international travel in 5 * hotels, yachts (a kayak is as good to me). Literally need about 300k and I perceive that as freedom.
