I just want to dock my phone and get a full blown linux desktop experience. How close are we 👀 nostr:note1zcwhwkrc0ns8tvg7gvgf93skcy09spydh5yma3afva2v22n6dtvqz32z5t

The pixel tablet would be awesome for this
Ubuntu Touch? 😉
Next update adds support for GUI. There's still more work to be done and there should be options for other distros instead of Debian.
Users should experiment around with all sorts of different setups and scenarios and see what works because this is still experimental at this stage.
The end goal is to run Windows or desktop Linux applications with desktop mode + USB-C DisplayPort alt mode on the Pixel 8 and later (which has DP alt mode). The other goal is to run GrapheneOS apps in nested virtual machines for greater isolation. The first objective is closer than the second.
This cool
but doesn't it completely break the Android security model?
No as they're isolated guest virtual machines separate from the GrapheneOS host. What happens in the VM stays within the VM, it's nothing like rooting your phone and using your Host OS' Linux kernel to run desktop Linux software. It's a logically separate and isolated virtual environment.
awesome! thanks for clarifying.
You really just need a way to remote into your home compute cluster tbh
Although not Linux, have you tried Samsung DeX?
Didn't Motorola or someone produce something like this 10 or more years ago? Even sold a "laptop " to dock it to, for extra battery and full keyboard experience on the go.
It was apparently called the Atrix. And Asus had a PadFone that was similar. And I guess neither was a full Linux experience.
Isn't that what Pinephones are for?
Yes but too underpowered but still a good option (devs should learn to work with minimal system resources anyway)
We're kinda close with stuff like xodos on android
Ongoing developments in flagship Android chipsets and drivers, changing to be more like desktop Linux, should get us all the way there soon
