Would it be a good idea for a note to signal a preferred set of relays for reading and writing comments?

Is this already addressed by reviewing the relays the author of the note utilizes?

Yes, but that is not flexible enough, plus the approach is not very obvious.

Maybe modify NIP-65 and say kind:1 events can also accept "r" tags following the same pattern.

not optimal for the decentralisation of the network

This would allow people who publish things to guard their readers from nasty spam and evil comments sent as replies, by specifying some restricted relays as the preferred set.

Of course people would still be able to reply using any relays they want, and clients should allow users to circle through different sets of relays when browsing comments (suggested relays / your relays / their relays / big relays / etc).

This 100% needs to be a part of the protocol for growth.

We want open and authentic, but we also all need private spaces. If you can't keep some things to a smaller audience you end up creating many small echo chanbers because not everyone enjoys the same content.

Self censorship is much more preferable to someone else choosing, or ending up on a spam list because someone is forced to see ALL your notes.

If I want to talk about a niche topic or if folks want to spam with their gambling bot notes, we don't all need to see everything. As long as we have the ability to choose.

Exactly!

People should just send comments to relays that the author uses and your own relays, if somebody uses all paid relays then those comments are not seen, natural spam filter but bad for cross community interaction when all paid relays

I think being able to direct posts to different communities without the other noticing is a good feature, but I an even better feature is each client doing these things slightly differently from the others.

Absolutely! Especially for multi lingual.

I personally don’t like seeing post I don’t understand, so I hate to post in a language no one would understand.

If I can direct my posts, I can write in the appropriate language for the targeted audience.

Yes, that's part of the benefit of having this approach.

If its rigid and unchangeable removes optionality..

Fundamental question, should clients be connecting to random relays? Seems like a way to harvest IP addresses so not great for privacy and so encourages multiplexing/proxification.

Each client makes their own choices.

That should be on the publishing pubkey, not the note.

Would the preferred relays just be stored in the notes tags?

Yes.

I think this is a good idea. It would make retrieving comments more reliable and accurate believe.

Seria uma boa um tutorial passo a passo de como rodar um relay.
