From what I remember, vitor said that there is a new feature coming which is country feeds. Where you can manually enter your country, state & city. Then look at those feeds.
The around me is a completely different feature which is like the check-in feature of Facebook. How it's supposed to work is your location is on, then you make a post click on around me tag then it loads from the Google database at which location you are. Example a restaurant. Then you check-in.
Then you can use the around me feature to see who else is at that restaurant etc. or who has been at that restaurant in the past.
It will be a useful feature once we have more users on nostr.
I agree with the location nonsense. I would love if we didn't have to turn on our gps to use it and if we could manually enter our location because I tried it today and since my phone is de-googled it won't work.
I have used a fake gps to change my location to see if users have used it in major cities.
I always keep my location off. I have no interest in using it. The only time I use it is when I'm driving and need google maps as my gps.
It would be best to put a request on GitHub for your idea. Although I remember see the country feeds request there but not your second request.
