Viable alternative? Host your own what? Serious question for anyone considering ditching the cloud.

Hosting your own is really the only way. I'm still trying to figure that out for myself and then my family.

The Cypherpunks realized that they were the way forward, despite Chaum’s promising eCash technology (for which he wanted to keep his code private, not FOSS, thus NOT SOVEREIGN).

Stack on.

Nextcloud could be an option. You can even install that on a start9 server easily.

It's got most of what I want, but not everything.

I would like someone with better skills to fork nextcloud to use nostr keypairs instead of archaic accounts.

Nextcloud is slow buggy trash. I moved to synching, radicale, and miniflux to replace nextcloud and everything just works

I like #mintter and #nostr a lot. Also self host as much as I can (email, nodes, webserver, VPN,…)

You could run a little computer at home & self-host tools like NextCloud very simply. Pickup a desktop from my site if you’d like some handholding 🫡

not ditching the cloud; using your own. start9.com

I always have the fear that when I selfhost that my house burns down and I lose all my data :D

Same convenient idea how to backup from this scenario?

they make it very easy to do backups. running your own server doesn't mean that's your only copy. you would definitely want to have backups. it just means you are in control and can access from anywhere
