I tried to update umbel to 1.0 one time and clicking the button did nothing. Now I'm too scared to try to click it again.

I don't blame you. Forums were all afrenzy about failed upgrades especially for the rpi plebs. I'm still on 0.5.4, probably staying there.

I'm ditching it and installing everything normally. I don't need a web os for my software.

I would stay on the same version if everything is working just fine. Unless you need to update for something to work. I would hitup the dev on github he does get back to him if you mention him in the post.
