If we do our job right, no one should ever know how many people use Nostr. And the further Nostr spreads, the more impossible it should be, to get an accurate user count.

We shouldn't know what people are doing on here, unless they have specifically decided to inform us. If we can count them all, then someone can trace them all.

I see no way to prevent anyone from storing all events and counting pubkeys seen multiple times

Then you don't understand how Nostr works.

You do not have access to all events and the percentage of events you have access to is set to steadily shrink.

I think all nostr kinds that are meant to be private or limited audience should be (gift wrap) encrypted. Because basing privacy on relay selection seems too leaky

You can encrypt anything. Different topic from which relay to write it to.

Also, don't need relays to move notes.

This is all a trackable ledger? Not sure I follow?

Guess it's a trade off between showing nostr's growth vs privacy and decentralisation

I thought #nostr is neither designed to be private nor it should be .. it is public market place .. with absolute anonymity assurance ..

In fact every client should show number of active npubs .. just the way they showed when you logged I to second life ..

If there is traffic in the market , sellers can sell their goods .. creatives may showcase their memes .. service providers may jack up the services ..

One network to count them all

Yes think like Tor, your not supposed to know who is doing what, it's non of your business.
