#asknostr Hey, parents, do you have recommendations for kid-friendly audio players like the Yoto Mini or equivalent?

Thanks. Great design and I appreciate the business model, but I’m more interested in a rugged MP3 player with toddler-friendly UX.

My time to shine here: https://www.hoerbert.com/

This thing is almost indestructible.

It survived 4 years with two growing up toddlers so far.

It took 2-3 dips in the pool, at least 10 drops from the table on the hard floor and many tiny feet stepping on the chassis.

It looks a little beaten bit still works and plays without issue 😎

The best part: You decide what it plays from the sd card. Fully repairable design (schematics available) and you may use their scripting language as well

This looks fantastic. Got to love German engineering. But that price tag. 😅 Let’s see if nostr:npub19pj6f0nc9q6xr26qe3g8m6xe3hwe0d6p6zcvf57cm3kayghjdj0slnlenu will sign off on it.

Just look at this badass!

The issue I have with both the Tonie and Yoto players is that you have to buy the figurines or cards to get audio to play. What if you want to play content from the local library or mp3s you’ve acquired elsewhere?

I looked into making an Alexa skill that would make it easy but then you have to worry about locking down all the other features of that device.

Is there an OSS that lets you create a similar experience on a raspberry pi?

Yep. Same concern here. If there’s a player that would do both (unlikely, as they’re following the “Gillette model”), I’d buy it.
