my favorite dog training book (Karen Pryor’s Don’t Shoot the Dog) is really careful to make the point that when you give a dog a treat you have to give it to them with as much love and respect as possible; throwing the treat at the dog undoes all the work you did to earn their respect to follow your orders

I love this sentiment 🐶 I don't have a dog nor planning on getting one anytime soon but I love reading dog training books. haven't read that one though.

I've discovered this to be true when training humans at work too.
