Sure, but the square with the rounded corners is to show how an app button/icon would look like. In fact there are two proposals here one with the Zelda/hexagon shape (bottom) and one with the gem/drop/egg like shape (top). Meaning the ostrich inside de “amethyst” stone.
Yep, it's because Pixel phones icons are placed in a circle, not in the iPhone shape.
