They do filter, what makes you say that?
Brita filters improve taste by removing stuff like chlorine, lead & copper, but they can't filter out bacteria, viruses, minerals (like calcium & magnesium), fluoride, some chemicals (like PFOA/PFOS), or drug residues. Depending on what you want to filter there are other alternatives.

Yeah definitely a scam. We have a Zazen water filter, pricey but worth it.
