Nip05s are basically worthless unless the domain can prove that you are you.

For example I could go get a verified account at NostrCheck for Donald Trump, doesn’t mean I am Donald trump. But if you prove that you own the domain or the owner proves the person they are verifying is who they say they are and the owner is also trustworthy, then it can be helpful.

I don't think the purpose of nip05 is to prove your identity, it's just to assert which pubkey goes with a given display name since display names aren't unique.

True, but many think this proves identity, it doesn’t

Those "many" have to start using their brains and do their own research. The future is about helping others but not hodling their hands forever.

It's not worthless. It's help those who use their brains to research and weather the profile and legit or not.

Think of it like email. Do you timcook69@gmail.com or timcook@apple.com is the legit one 😆

Nip05 doesn't work that way, and I don't believe people think it does.

It does give an easy to remember identifier, rather than a long hard to remember npub string.

It does give a way to verify a new npub is controlled by the same person if an old npub gets compromised.

Those are cases where it is useful.

You are right, should have been more clear saying it’s not useful for verification
