Water is essential. Among the contents of my pack, I always carry some form of water purification. For the last 6 months, I've been carrying the Grayl bottle.

It's a two-part bottle. Dirty water goes in the outer bottle, then the inner bottle is pressed into it like a coffee press, forcing the water through the filter. They claim the filter is rated for all the common waterborne pathogens plus viruses and chlorine and flouride from city water.

My Snowpeak 600ml titanium cup nests on the bottle nicely and provides a container to boil or cook in if needed. Also, a spork is handy at times.
