Good move. I should have done that with Eastfarthing, but didn't react fast enough. I'll cellar my remaining ounce and see how long I can make it last.
Smoke what you have then. But maybe not that Sutliff, it's rare stuff these days.
Today is JRR Tolkien's birthday.
Don't forget to smoke a bowl of Capstan Blue and reread some of your favorite passages of Middle Earth lore in honor of the Professor.

I work around equipment, power tools, and saws so nothing around my wrist. And much of my day to day writing is done on lumber, therefore it's usually a carpenter's pencil for me.

I'll also add flashlight, Zippo, and firearm, Walther PPS.

Today, we're going to learn about one of my favorite obscure tools.

This is a hookaroon.
It's used for moving firewood. It allows me to stick a piece of wood and pick it up off the ground without bending over. It's great for dragging logs or branches. I've also found it to be quite useful for demo work like stripping out drywall and pulling up subflooring.

With just a little creativity, I'm sure you can imagine how useful it could be as a breaching tool or improvised weapon. It's basically a backwoods war hammer. It's definitely one of the things I would grab in case of a zombie apocalypse.

The logger in me cringes at pictures of hinge cut trees. Not sure I can bring myself to lay over any of my oak trees like that.
But if I find a cedar in a suitable place, I'll give that a try
Working in the woods today. It's 14° F. Good morning for a fire.

Now that deer season is over, it's time for some high-impact woods activities. I have several dead and fallen tree clean up and process into firewood.

Do a little leather work and repair it yourself.
Something like this should work in place of that plastic part.

Excellent work, Dawn.
DeWalt with a top handle? I think I could use one of those.
That's awesome, thanks for sharing the pictures.
I wish it was still that way, where a man could generate income from the woods.
But modern society has decided that real fur that came from the natural environment and has a story behind it is somehow less ethical and fashionable than petroleum-based clothing manufactured by third-world child labor.
Thinning the population and training the dogs mostly.
We used to always skin them out and they would keep the pelts to sell at the end of season, but anymore they're not worth enough to justify the time skinning.
We tossed them in the back of their truck and I never asked what they're doing with them this year.
My brother kept a hide from a coon he trapped in that same timber last year and he's working on some moccasins/ boot covers but I don't think he's finished them.
Some people go shopping on black Friday.
We go coon hunting.

We've got some friends that keep coon dogs and, at least once a year, we invite them to hunt in our woods.
The dogs treed this big boar coon right away.

We then treed two sets of doubles and ended the night with 5 coons in the truck.

Well, there is a bit of a feeling of sadness for taking the life of a beautiful animal. But it is outweighed by a feeling of pride and gratitude.
Pride in my prowess and skill in moving quietly and shooting accurately, in testing myself against a creature that has senses much keener than my own. Pride that I can secure meat for myself and my family. Gratitude that I have the ability and means to hunt, and land on which to do so. And gratitude that the deer was created for the purpose of providing sustenance for man.
I passed up a buck on opening day, and then had several days without having a shot at anything.
Then this guy walked through this morning.

Fiat mining activities for this week:
Wastewater system install
1000 gallon septic tank, 1000 gallon pump tank, flowing out to 400 feet of low-profile chambers

Completed the job before the rain arrived, passed county inspection, and the homeowner was thoroughly impressed with our skill and efficiency.
Now I'm going to give myself a day off to go deer hunting.

I bought the dip,
and I just shot the possum that's been eating my eggs for last two and a half weeks.
Today was a good day.
Backcountry trips are better with reliable gear. Here's some of the stuff I used on the mountain.
Homemade leather haversack

Ka-Bar Becker BK-10

Sleep set up: Klymit insulated pad, Warbonnet custom down 20° top-quilt

Homemade bamboo trekking poles

Titanium cup, alcohol stove

Carried it all on my heavily modified Eberlestock pack frame

Just returned from a week in the mountains, hunting and camping.

walked several miles with a thirty pound pack, cooked over fire, and slept in a canvas tent.
No internet, only used my phone to look at maps and send lora messages.
Have I missed anything while I was away?

I might also suggest waxed canvas.

Got home yesterday from a two-week work trip.
I had lots of things I could have done on the farm after being away, but the boy requested we go fishing.

So instead, we got the poles, went down to the pond, flipped over a log to find some grubs, and fished.
No complaints.

My son is currently 10.
We're building in the fourth turning so they can prosper in the coming first turning.
Do you mean the Palouse region in general, or specifically the Palouse soil series?
In either case, that's some deep loess.
We're working on a big timber frame truss and siding job.
We did not mill or cut the parts on these, but were hired to assemble and stain them at the build site.

Introducing bullishInvoice — old school invoices but make them #Bitcoin
I needed to create itemized invoices for some clients recently and one of the top results I visited when searching “invoice generator” was riddled with ads. Needless to say, I didn’t use it. Plus, sats are the standard amirite.
Enter bullishInvoice.
https://thebullishbitcoiner.github.io/bullishinvoice
Here’s what we’ve got to start:
- Add one or more items to the invoice and specify the price in sats
- Bring your own Lightning invoice for the total amount
- QR code generation using
- Pay to export (e.g. PDF, PNG, or print)
The screenshot says 50 sats but I lowered it 21 sats temporarily for testing. It works best on desktop at the moment although PWA support is there.
Try it out and let me know what you think!
Here’s a sample output on mobile. That’s a real Lightning invoice btw if anyone wants to pay it. 😎

Trying a new blend.
Meridian from G. L. Pease.

This is a medium English blend. Leathery orientals are definitely in the foreground. Latakia is present but very subtle, and occasionally I detect a bit of sweetness from the Virginias.
