I had a chat with a friend of mine who lives in Chandigarh. He had a fair bit to say about the current Can/Ind rift. So aside from the political/geopolitical/separatist/religious/historical element he reckoned that a key issue is India's increasing frustration with Canada, particularly under Trudeau, about criminal gangs that are involved with drug/gun/people/student smuggling and general thuggery in Punjab and Canada, that are perceived to be somewhat hiding under the Khalistan banner and despite Indian gov trying to get Canada to respond by applying pressure on these gang members, Trudeau has, perhaps due to naivety been unwilling to acknowledge those concerns.

Obviously, this is his personal pov but given that the Western media might just be on the "freedom fighters seeking legitimate autonomy" bandwagon, his thoughts seemed to add a bit of context.
