I moved from simplenote to Joplin the other month, as I can run my own server. It's fairly basic, I just use it for text.
All comments on this thread failed to suggest a decent note-taking app that isn't super convoluted.
I used Telegram as a way to quick jot notes for future use, reminders and whatnot, but I am trying to move out of that, so I started using https://simplenote.com/, but what a weird app. It logs me out if I don't use it for like 2 days, I don't like the fact that it has these titles because I don't need titles, I just need a place to paste content, and also it's not chronological like Telegram messages but also I can't reorder the notes as I wish, they are shown by most recent updated first, which is weird.
Anyway, all of that was ok if it wasn't for the weird syncing issues that started to happen recently: it takes sometimes hours for updates made in one device to be synced to other devices, I don't know, it looks like their server is broken or something.
I don't know why I'm writing this note anymore, but I think we could easily have a note-taking app with private notes writing to private relays on Nostr.
Discussion
That looks not bad but it's impossible to run JavaScript on my server.
used this for awhile and gave up because syncing wasn't reliable
Haven't had any issues yet - was that with your own joplin server (I think it's still in beta?) or via one of the other integrations?
yeah was with my own server over wireguard. Think it used webdav or something. Some ancient garbage protocol
Yes webdav is the issue. I'm still on Joplin but thinking of jumping to obsidian or move back to my private discord server where I took notes. A discord server for notes is actually great.
I've using Obsidian and sync files to the server using Syncthing so that they're available on my desktop and mobile. Seems to work alright.
Everyone remotely interested in taking notes should watch this video to bring themselves up to speed.
I used that too, after switching from iPhone to Android. In that case I use OneDrive at the moment. It's the only app with who I use OneDrive because Joplin is end-to-end encrypted.
i totally love Joplin.
