All comments on this thread failed to suggest a decent note-taking app that isn't super convoluted.

I used Telegram as a way to quick jot notes for future use, reminders and whatnot, but I am trying to move out of that, so I started using https://simplenote.com/, but what a weird app. It logs me out if I don't use it for like 2 days, I don't like the fact that it has these titles because I don't need titles, I just need a place to paste content, and also it's not chronological like Telegram messages but also I can't reorder the notes as I wish, they are shown by most recent updated first, which is weird.

Anyway, all of that was ok if it wasn't for the weird syncing issues that started to happen recently: it takes sometimes hours for updates made in one device to be synced to other devices, I don't know, it looks like their server is broken or something.

I don't know why I'm writing this note anymore, but I think we could easily have a note-taking app with private notes writing to private relays on Nostr.

agreed, seems like low hanging fruit.

I did something like that with https://github.com/ebrakke/nts

https://nts.fly.dev/

Mostly as a way for me to share links between devices. Right now the webserver is also the relay.

Markor + Syncthing is the best you're going to get for extremely simple notes with p2p syncing on all your devices.

Markor is a great balance of "as simple as you want + it actually does a lot of shit if you prefer"

This is my setup as well. I also use Zim on my desktop on the same synched files. It is not perfect but food enough.

Vim on desktop for me. Bound to a hotkey to open my "working-memory.txt" synced file. Its lovely

And for everything else: Obsidian

I want just the simple. Markor is like what, a full-fledged filesystem with Markdown support and a bunch of other things in a directory-like structure? No, that's not at all what I need.

I like Syncthing, but just turning it on and off whenever I write a single word in my note-taking app feels very bad.

Something's gotta turn on and off to sync (as you know, I know).

Markor has an optional directory system, yes. But you can also just have one single file in one folder, name it note.txt and sync it. Ignore markdown if you like.

Or it's just not for you, and that's aight too :)

Someone had suggested Markor before and I had looked into it, maybe it was you.

lol probably. I'll refrain next time, assuming I remember.

Alternativey: See you next time we talk about Markor again!

Have you tried Joplin?

Get in touch with nostr:npub1m4ny6hjqzepn4rxknuq94c2gpqzr29ufkkw7ttcxyak7v43n6vvsajc2jl

Just make a community out of a local relay.

With Chachi, you could add articles, notes, publications, videos, etc.

Yeah I use telegram saved messages for a similar reason, but would like something like that. Preferably with a synced app on my desktop too, like telegram.

Lol, I'm sending notes to myself on signal.

Maybe nip04 could be repurposed just for this 🤔

obsidian?

I moved from simplenote to Joplin the other month, as I can run my own server. It's fairly basic, I just use it for text.

https://joplinapp.org/

That looks not bad but it's impossible to run JavaScript on my server.

used this for awhile and gave up because syncing wasn't reliable

Haven't had any issues yet - was that with your own joplin server (I think it's still in beta?) or via one of the other integrations?

yeah was with my own server over wireguard. Think it used webdav or something. Some ancient garbage protocol

Yes webdav is the issue. I'm still on Joplin but thinking of jumping to obsidian or move back to my private discord server where I took notes. A discord server for notes is actually great.

I've using Obsidian and sync files to the server using Syncthing so that they're available on my desktop and mobile. Seems to work alright.

Everyone remotely interested in taking notes should watch this video to bring themselves up to speed.

https://youtu.be/XRpHIa-2XCE

I used that too, after switching from iPhone to Android. In that case I use OneDrive at the moment. It's the only app with who I use OneDrive because Joplin is end-to-end encrypted.

i totally love Joplin.

I don't know if this qualifies... but I've used Scrinever for a while on and off to journal.

This one looks good, but I don't like to pay for software, I prefer to be the product.

Awww. I have forgotten I've paid for it.

Did you give Standard Notes a shot?

What about logseq?

I don't understand this. It's like a graph of complications made for people who think they can put their entire brain inside the computer or something like that, right?

can be, but I don't use it like that.

what I like the most that I don't have to think where to put the notes...

I just journal things every day. When you start feeling like being more organizes, start tagging. Then add metadata. Then searches based on them. Then maybe templates if things are repeating.

e. g. I track how much I owe for what type of fire wood, I have a shopping lists organized by names, types, etc.

I track both work and personal and just by a tag I see all of the related notes.

LogSeq stands for Logical Sequence. They pride themselves on their journaling feature which offers the same STRUCTURE of infinitely-nested notes.

If you want to test drive a free SaaS alternative that works similarly- try WorkFlowy. You can use a burner email and not provide payment info.

The concept of these apps is nested information. Everything is stored within individual nodes. This means your lists grow over time, and can evolve into multiple lists. This is organic information management, the same way our brains work naturally.

I do not use journaling at all myself. The base features of the app, creating new "pages" and entire graphs which contain my SPECIFIED data, is the value. LogSeq allows us to actually manage the notes we store.

On the note of journaling- I actually use a hacky workaround to replace the journal button with an "index" button which functions as a table of contents for the graph I am working within. This is pretty much what I consider the optimal note-taking environment that users are looking for. And there are plenty of drawbacks in using LogSeq and this workaround. We know the experience can be better one day, but LogSeq is king for now.

Wasn’t aware of this. Thanks for sharing

Not really. You can use in multiple ways. I usually journal through it and tag according to topic in order to easily retrieve it.

LogSeq isn't open source anymore

Really?! I didn’t know about it. So sad.

They open-sourced the front end for a specific build, which is still available. But you are correct- the backend and most recent frontend are not open source.

Obsidian has the lead on convenience with their $8/mo "Publish" environment.

Joplin has some self-hosted dockerized options I think.

I believe the devs of LogSeq intend to compete in this market- but Nostr needs a totally FOSS LogSeq that interoperates with Nostr natively. LogSeq is written mostly in Clojure, which I'm not sure is really a benefit in regards to Nostr applications. It needs to be rebuilt to serve us optimally here.

Should we use a special kind for these notes? Reminders can use nip52

Note-taking is overrated. I already have a draft relay hooked up via amethyst that stores notes just fine. Could add a second relay for specifically notes that aren't drafts.

Users want angency. Agency comes in different forms in any app we use.

If you want AGENTIC note-taking, the answer is not simple.

The answer is https://logseq.com/

Even if you connect relays to another notepad application- the answer will always be LogSeq.

Yes, the path to "a Nostr LogSeq" is convuluted, but there is real interest behind it, not just myself. I met a nostrich earlier this year who is already trying to build this, but I don't recall who it was. I aim to build it too, after I develop a Nostr client (or two).

On the subject of note-taking, I predominately use discord myself. I find there is a difference between temporary notes and archival. For me, LogSeq is my archive or vault. Discord is where I store my short-term or less meaningful notes. I imagine this isn't much different than how you use Telegram.

Also if anyone is interested, I'm happy to set aside client development to work on this type of application instead. Would rather approach it with someone who is equally interested. Otherwise I will try myself in a few years.

buy a notebook and a pencil and quit complaining.

I just plain text in folders that I edit with neovim 💀

Completely agree, nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s suggested something like JSON Canvas. Obsidian is nice, but a hassle to sync on iOS. Seems right to be on Nostr

Logseq is the best in my view.

Trying to find devs who agree, and are eager to work on a nostr-enabled alternative. If you know of anyone, please tag them or share this article with them:

i was thinking about a private note taking and todo list app on nostr. replacing it with my google keep.

I often use todoist.com for taking notes. It's a todo app, but it works quite well for taking notes or saving links (bookmarks) with a note. These items all line-up in a inbox which I 'clean' up once a week during my week review moment.

I used Ulysses , it is simple and markdown . can write everything down , separately on new sheets then put back together .

Ulysses is a paid app though

yes it is.

for free app , I just simply use sticky notes app . it just to write notes .

So based on your description Google Keep would fit your usecase. Just drop note there, don't need name. Synced.

Last year I searched for a Notes App after moving away from iCloud. i tried many apps but at the end my choice is Joplin. Use it on my Android Phone, my iPad and my two Windows and one Linux PC. It's pretty good

the best note-taking app simply does not exists.

I use telegram as well then consolidate on markdown files with Sublime + Git, where I also keep journals.

Doesn't exist yet!

Why not obsidian with markdown right out of the gate?

Well i use sublime all the time, it's just natural.

But I'll check it out for android. Assuming it works with git / github...

Obsidian is just the editor, but there is a community git plugin that might work for you: https://github.com/Vinzent03/obsidian-git

Tell me about standardnotes, nostr:nprofile1qqsyawyrzrttfmv4cmtx5w2m85702kdct7hv3amfrkhagpdf9cz46mgprpmhxue69uhkv6tvw3jhytnwdaehgu3wwa5kuef0qy3hwumn8ghj7enfd36x2u3wdehhxarj9emkjmn99ulkwmr0vfskc0tpd3kqng2s9w ? Do you regularly use this in conjunction with logseq?

Yes. Standard Notes is very private and secure, and easily to use on mobile. I manually write in or use AI with either Keep or Standard Notes for quick capture (depending on the content), and then I transfer it into Logseq as an information management system to organize it all.

You can do that with Obsidian and the nostr plugin.

Logseq

Why not just email yourself? I email ${YOURHANDLE}+notes@gmail.com. I have occasionally used other apps over the years. Needless to say the only notes that are still preserved are those that were in my email.

I've been using Obsidian for a while but not to it's full capabilities. So far, it has been better than anything I've used before.

help.obsidian.md/Home

Self hosted Logseq is the answer you’re looking for.

Probably been linked 528 times already, but i can't see it... i like this little guy: https://github.com/gsantner/markor

i synch the notes across devices with syncthing. Maybe not ideal, but does the job great!

standardnotes.com

Signal is what I use for notes.

Quillpad

I like dontpad.com, something sinple like that but private, could be the perfect notepad!

I use Standard Notes.

It isn't perfect, but I'm happy.

I will try this one.

I've been using Joplin. you can self host a server and sync across devices in a self sovereign way. it's open source. someone just needs to write a nostr wrapper for posting....

Try obsidian, notes are stored locally and are just markdown files. You can sync the folder with syncthing to different devices.
