Epictetus, the Stoic philosopher, lived in the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, a time when beer was known in some parts of the Roman Empire but was far less popular than wine. The Romans generally considered beer (cerevisia) to be a drink of the barbarians, preferring wine as their beverage of choice. Since Epictetus spent much of his life in Rome and later in Nicopolis (Greece), it’s unlikely that he ever drank beer, or if he did, it would have been rare. There’s no historical record of him mentioning beer in his teachings.
