In my area the only venomous snakes are rattlesnakes. Learning to identify species (of animals, plants, and fungi) is a great experience, and could save a life. I find the process to be fun. It's always rewarding when I can put it to use as well.

Btw, this snake is Pituophis catenifer catenifer. It looks similar to a rattlesnake, but has no rattle.
