If you're new here and have medium tech skills, please consider running your own relay!

A great one to start with is Nostream by nostr:npub1qqqqqqyz0la2jjl752yv8h7wgs3v098mh9nztd4nr6gynaef6uqqt0n47m

Individuals running relays is what makes nostr decentralized and censorship resistant.

Nobody can ever censor posts on your own relay!

I’m gonna do this but also when I get time I’m considering writing my own one too

Thought:

In the future governments can ban certain public keys and relais containing those public keys will be fined.

Possible?

Governments can't operate outside their jurisdictions. China has already banned my relay yet here my notes stand and the CCP can't get me.

What is the realistic system needed? I've got a spare old server that's currently a bitcoin node, decent older spec.

The greatest thing about Nostr is how nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 designed it to be uncensorable, because anyone with a simple computer can run your own relay, and publish to it.

If he's so brilliant why is his brood war mmr so low?

You say simple computer, made me think 🤔

Can it run on a raspberry pi?

And what about internet bandwidth, storage... Can you tell what are the requirements?

Yeah, Nostream can run in a raspberry pi with at least 4GB ram. Other relay implementations can as well I’m sure.

Nostr relays are pretty lightweight.

So what kinda storage should one look into having to run this? Are there certain parameters you can run to limit types of data usage/ duration of stroage etc?

If you just store your own notes, extremely small... I doubt you can make 1gb of notes in a decade of shitposting

I just ask as running one if like to uncle Jim for a few friends

Just joined and have 13yr infrastructure experience but I’ve had no involvement with anything like this before.

Can I mirror all notes from history or does it just store future relayed notes from when you start?

You can mirror your previous notes no problem.
